Crystal Mountain Treasures is a product of our love of Rockhounding and mining. Tara is responsible for turning Walt into a Rock nut! She used to mine in Herkimer, NY, and when she relocated to the Midwest, she brought some small dolomite "boulders" with her to break open later. After mining in Stoneham for Barite, she remembered the trove of possible herkimer "eggs" and pulled them out of storage so Walt could have a crack at them (no pun intended, I swear!) He found 6 beautiful "diamonds" during his backyard dig and from then on he was hooked!

Here is Tara mining up in Herkimer, NY in the late 90's. She hit the mother lode that day! Though she can't recall the first time ever hearing of or seeing a Herkimer "diamond", she distinctly remembers being told by a crystal saleswoman in NY that she "could dig for three days and not find a thing up there!" Well, she was determined to one day get there and dig her own. First trip up produced about 12 nice clear sized Herkimers. Not bad for a half days' work with just a mallet, eh? From then on in, mining was an obssession. Her collection has now become THEIR collection (they were married in July 2000) and has grown to include some locally mined specimens. Some of their finds can be seen for sale on this site; they enjoy selling off just enough to fund another rock hunting excursion and maybe pay a few bills. Heck, ya still have to eat, right?
